Fellowship Description
The Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at NYOH was started by Dr. Charles Neer in 1977 and has trained many of the national and international leaders in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. Dr. Louis U. Bigliani became Director of the Service in 1990 and continues the strong tradition. After Dr. Neer retired in 1990, the Shoulder Service added specialists in sports medicine and athletic injuries expanding our expertise and created the "Center for Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Medicine." The fellowship is ACGME-accredited in Sports Medicine allowing our fellows to take the CAQ in Sports Medicine if so desired.
Operative experience includes advanced shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, arthroplasty, revision surgery and trauma. In addition, extensive experience in sports medicine procedures including pediatric and adolescent shoulder, elbow and knee as well as adult knee will be obtained. A new state-of-the-art 4-station arthroscopy laboratory in addition to an extensive arthroscopy core curriculum ensures the fellows? ongoing education and development of surgical skills.
The Fellows spend a ½ day per week in the private office to hone clinical decision-making skills and also supervise the residents and medical students in a weekly shoulder, elbow and sports medicine clinic.
The Fellows have a full day per week dedicated to academic pursuits. During this time they participate in translational research in the Biomechanics or Molecular Biology Section of the Center for Orthopaedic Research and complete at least 1 basic science project in addition to one clinical outcomes project during the year. The Fellows are also invited to assist in the preparation of invited manuscripts, book chapters, and on-line projects.
This program is part of the ASES fellow selection process.
